Meet Tommy!

Tommy is one spunky, cheeky boy! A social butterfly, he is always the first to come running whenever he is called. If you are looking for a cute little shadow – you have found one in Tommy. Tommy loves to be with his humans and will happily soak up all the attention he can get.

Tommy was born blind – but don’t let that fool you! He is incredibly confident, curious, and quick to adapt. He has learnt to use his other senses to navigate his world and isn’t one to shy away from play or adventure. In his current home, Tommy has learnt the layout of his environment and rarely runs into anything. He will happily explore and wander around independently, pausing to focus on smell, sounds, and the floor underfoot if he needs to check where he is.

He gets along well with other small, gentle, friendly dogs, and gains security and comfort from their company, often reciprocating their confidence to explore and play. However, Tommy truly loves his humans. His tail starts wagging the moment he can hear them, and he delights in affectionate cuddles and pats. Tommy will need a reasonable amount of human contact play – as he cannot run around or generally find or gather his toys. Activities that actively stimulate Tommy physically and mentally would need to be considered. There is a wonderful community Facebook group that supports owners of blind dogs with tips, tricks, and recommendations. Tommy’s foster carer can share any details.

Finding a home for Tommy that is safe, consistent, and full of love is a top priority. He would do best in a small to medium home, where furniture, his bed/food/water, and access to a toileting area, stay consistent and are rarely changed. Developing trust in his family is a must, as he will need plenty of time to adjust and feel safe. Any type of stairs or levels would be a safety risk for Tommy, and he cannot go to a home that has them. His backyard must be secure, with no retaining walls or fall risks. Tommy’s forever family would ideally be home with him most of the time, with time alone at a minimum. Lots of verbal communication will help him to feel oriented and supported. He would adore having a pup/young dog sibling, but would thrive with a loving family regardless.

Despite his vision, Tommy is so full of life, love, and charm. He promises endless cuddles, loyal companionship and a truly special bond for life.

HEALTH WAIVER:

Tommy is visually impaired in both eyes. He has been seen by the Animal Eye Services. Please see notes below.

RIGHT EYE: severe microphthalmia, congenital miosis & abnormal pupil shape. Cannot see from this eye.

LEFT EYE: mild microphthalmia, congenital miosis & abnormal pupil shape. He can see only slightly from this eye.

Suspected Merle Ocular Dysgenesis (double merle gene).

Tommy will need regular yearly eye checks throughout his life. Currently his eye lids are larger then his eyes so if his globe does not grow properly into in his lids - worst case he may need his right eye removed at a later stage HOWEVER this will not be seen until 1 year+ of age.
