Aspen is a young, deaf, Border Collie with a big brain and an even bigger personality. He’s incredibly intelligent, highly aware of his surroundings and forms a really strong, genuine bond with his person once he settles.
At his best, Aspen is affectionate, funny and engaging. He loves being involved, enjoys water play, and thrives when he has something to focus on ,whether that’s learning, exploring or just being part of what you’re doing.
He’s not a “background dog” he’s one that connects and needs someone who is home often. He is also an “advanced level” dog and needs the right setup to bring out that best side of him. Aspen does best with structure, consistency and clear boundaries. When he becomes overwhelmed or frustrated, he can be impulsive and mouthy , this isn’t aggression, but a young, sensitive dog who struggles with regulation in the moment. With the right timing and guidance, he settles well and comes back down quickly. Being a working line dog, he is curious, driven and very capable of problem solving so a secure environment and good management , especially early on are important.
Aspen would suit a calm, experienced home that understands higher drive dogs and is comfortable providing structure while he settles. He is likely best suited as the only dog, or with a very steady, playful companion of similar size. He also has epilepsy which is currently managed with medication. His seizures are infrequent and he otherwise enjoys a normal, happy life. Aspen isn’t the right fit for every home but in the right environment, he is a deeply connected, rewarding and genuinely lovely dog to have by your side.
